Dan Brown: The Lost Symbol

September 16, 2009 Opinion No Comments

Well, I debated on even making a post about this book since it will be covered ad nasuem all over the blog-o-sphere, but I feel it is justified in the fact that it does concern our fraternity and we need to be well aware of the consequences it will have on us. First off, I am only half-way through the book and second, I have never been a fan of Dan Browns writing style. Putting those things aside, I would like to say that so far the book is a pleasant surprise. Instead of portraying freemason’s in a conspiratorial light, Brown has cast us in a very favorible way. With all the hype surrounding this book, this is a good thing.

The Prologue goes into detail on the 33rd degree and makes references to the penalties of our oath. It is spot on. He has definitely done his research with this one.  The fraternity is portrayed as a very honorable group of men and he has quite a few sections where he emphasizes our ideals of freedom of thought and religion.  He also has a part where the main character Robert explains why freemasonry is not a religion, and he does it in a splendid fashion. This, of course, has been an age old issue for our organization, with fundamentalists claiming we are a religion.

So far, I can say I am happy with the book. Not necessarily with the writing style, but that is a matter of personal taste. I will post a full review after I have finished it.
